1. Set a timer or motion detector for lights

Motion detectors are great for the lights located on the side or back of your home. They will turn on when you need them to and save energy when you don’t.

A timer is great for the lights on the front of your home so that they are on at all dark hours, but you don’t have to remember to turn them off when the sun comes out.

2. Insulate

Insulation is very important for the efficiency of one’s home. It keeps the hot or cold air you are paying to have in your home indoors so it does not get wasted. It also helps to prevent unwarranted things like ice dams from forming.

3. Repair leaks

A leaky pipe can waste gallons of water a day. There is also a great chance that the issue will get worse and you will be stuck with a flood of water that ruins interior parts of your home. Fix leaks right away!

4. Grow plants

Plants are both beautiful and produce oxygen for the surrounding environment. They are also relatively cheap and many are very low maintenance. Add some to your home’s exterior for a little flair!

Radon is a naturally radioactive substance that resides in soil. If it is in the soil in your yard, you may be exposed causing potential health problems down the road.  You can check for radon with a kit from the home improvement store. If the level is above 4, action should be taken.

6. Use recycled or reclaimed materials

Almost all products that you could put on your home can be made with recyclable materials. This reduces the amount of waste created from using brand new resources for your product.

You have probably heard of the garage door openers that you can control from your phone. Did you know that there are systems similar to this for your electricity and other home functions? Things like turning off all of your home’s lights can be as easy as the press of a single button.

9. Create a drainage system that directs runoff into your plants and grass for watering

Design a rock path or another water collection system that you can water your plants with. By doing this you will not have to use fresh water from the hose.

10. Have a compost area

Create a compost bin with organic ingredients like leftover food, yard rubbish, or coffee grounds. Don’t rush the process, it can take anywhere from 3-12 months. When it’s done, place the compost on top of exposed soil and it will give your plants natural nutrients, helps conserve water, and reduces waste!

11. Eco-friendly outdoor furniture

There are many brands that use furniture made from recycled materials that is long lasting. Bamboo is a great source because it is easily renewable and low maintenance! Glass, iron, and other types of wood are also used to create sustainable furniture.

12. Energy efficient windows

There are multiple options when it comes to energy efficient windows. Energy efficient windows reduce the drafts that transfer from indoors to outdoors. 13. Skylights and large windows

Skylights and large windows is a great way to bring in natural light during the day time. The energy that is currently used to light homes is not renewable and produces harmful emissions.
